Small Beginnings

Do not despise the day of small beginnings.

Why?

Small beginnings start the glorious work God has prepared for you.

There is no doubt in my mind that God has put grand and significant dreams in your heart. These God-given desires are placed within you for a reason – to fulfill your specific purpose as a Christ-follower. As you seek God fully, you will get a glimpse of what those plans are. Yielding to the Holy Spirit, denying the flesh, and the influence of culture brings clarity and precision to your calling, purpose, and dreams. “Delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). Those desires are birthed within you to reflect the One who gave them to you, that is, Jesus Christ.

However, dreams can be daunting at times. It is tempting to have unbelief in what God has called you to do or become overwhelmed by the magnitude of how it will happen. The fear of failure looms large, and rejection can cause anyone with a God-sized vision to dig their heels in further. It might seem easier to push that dream down further and avoid it because of how far-fetched and elusive it seems. What are you supposed to do with a dream, vision, or purpose greater than yourself?

Start with a single step.

Then another.

One foot in front of the other.

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…” – Zechariah 4:10 NLT

It would be simple if that dream you have been sitting on became a reality today, RIGHT NOW. The truth is, there is no overnight success or instant results; when it comes to fulfilling your purpose, it involves small wins along the way. Each step is another victory towards fulfilling that dream, and the Lord rejoices to see it!

Therefore…

Do not despise the sacrifice you have taken to work towards your dream. God has given you a vision, and it takes ‘blood, sweat, and tears’ to bring it to life. Every time you wake up earlier, work harder, and fight a bit longer is another step in the right direction. You might not be where you want to be, but you are precisely where you need to be. Keep moving towards the goals, running the race that is before you and not turning back. (Hebrews 12:1-3)

Do not despise the consistent effort you have put in, even if you have not seen the results that you want yet. You will reap the rewards of your labor, hopefully beyond what you could think or imagine! The key is not to grow weary in doing good; every tiny measure adds up to an exceptional harvest when the time comes. (Galatians 6:9)

Do not despise the bumps and bruises along the way. God cares about your journey, as well as the destination that He has given you. The small beginnings are opportunities to learn differently and to walk humbly. God rejoices when your character looks more like Christ, and you yield more frequently to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

What can you do this week to begin fulfilling that God-sized dream He gave you? No matter how insignificant the step may be… do not despise it! God can use it and delights in it! Every action taken and each brick laid down is closer to seeing the vision come to life. I will pray that you will have the clarity to behold your dream and to courage to move forward in what God has given you.

Have a blessed week!

  1. I have been pursuing since 2019, my G.E.D. I would like to go to college for Human Resources- I have two boys with autism. This is the seed I believe the Lord has placed in my heart to follow. Although my children no longer live with me, they’ve shown me so much and have placed me in that path to follow through further education. This is now, my mission. Many just don’t understand these beautiful, special needs children.

    • Daniel,

Thank you for your example of how the Lord put that vision in your heart for special needs children. Those ‘small steps’ is every class taken until that degree is in your hands. Keep it up!
